How to Spot a Quality Essential Oil

There are so many essential oils on the market it can be overwhelming, especially since they are not all created equally. When looking for a quality oil, there are a few things to look for.
Dark, Glass Bottle
Light can damage oils, and EO’s compounds don’t mix well with plastic. Therefore a good quality oil will come tightly sealed in an amber glass bottle with an orifice reducer top, or sometimes a dropper.

Quantity
Typically EO’s will come in quantities less than 4oz, but usually half this size (15 mL or less). This is not always the case, but sometimes larger sizes can be more susceptible to certain forms of degradation if not stored properly.
Common and Latin Name
The label should clearly state the common AND Latin name of the plant used to make the oil.

100% Pure
Does the label/website clearly state the the product is 100% Pure Essential Oil (not essence or fragrance oil). Bonus if it’s organic! Essence oil is not pure, but a premixed blend of oils in a base of carrier oil.
If a label doesn’t explicitly say 100% pure, but the only ingredients are the common name and latin name of the plant, and all other boxes are checked then I am usually comfortable enough.

Country/Origin
The label or website should state the country/origin of the oil.

There are many quality oils out there, but these are the three I use:
Young Living
& Plant Life
Other brands I have heard good things about, but can’t attest to personally:
Vibrant Blue Oils
Melaluca, the Wellness Company
doTERRA
Mountain Rose Herbs
Rocky Mountain Oils
