My Husbands Protocol After Gallbladder Removal

I received a question from a girl who had her gallbladder removed back in 2009, and has been taking MiraLAX every day since to help prevent constipation. She wanted advice on ways to stop the MirLAX and natural remedies to try, instead.

My husband is the king of GI issues. He had SIBO and then his gallbladder removed, as well, a few years ago. Through the help of our holistic doctor, he has found a protocol that works for him. I'm not saying this will be the case for everyone, but he has trial and errored so many things I thought I would share this for anyone it may help.

If you Rely on MiraLax

You may not be in the same position relying on MiraLax everyday, but in case you are let me first tell you what he suggested for that:

  • Since your body is heavily reliant on MiraLAX, keep in mind that if you stop cold turkey you may have some side effects like constipation while your body regulates. Because of this he said, if it was him, he would slowly wean off. Like cut it down by 1/4 each week until you're completely off.

Ox Bile - a Must Have

Your gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, a digestive fluid your liver makes to help break down fats. When you eat, the gallbladder squeezes bile into the small intestine in a strong, focused release. After gallbaldder removal, your liver still makes bile normally, but it drips continuously into the intestine instead of being stored and released in bursts.

Because of the above, Liam takes an Ox Bile whenever he eats anything especially fatty, greasy, or if it's going to be a really large meal. This helps add bile to the meal.

MotilPro for Motility

He also takes two MotilPro's every morning with breakfast. This helps increase the motility of the digestive system. He said if you're experiencing constipation, especially after trying to wean off MiraLAX he would take two Motil Pro's with every meal for 3 days. If things still aren't improving, to continue this until they do. And then once things get more regulated you can move to the two every morning with breakfast.
